Correspondence with HK Post in which this postbox was mentoned:
(HK Post reply dated 2 January 2013)
Dear Mr. Sin,
At this beginning of 2013, here's specially wishing you another joyous and successful year!
First of all, may I thank you and your team for the untiring efforts in caring our posting boxes. There are definitely areas for us to do better in respect of preservation of the vintage posting boxes. Please be assured that we have been working hard with AMO on this aspect.
For SPB No.235 Lei Yue Mun GRV box, may wish to be updated that repainting has been carried out in late November 2012 and a photo taken is attached for your reference. We are aware that the location of this posting box is not desirable. We have sought professional advice from the Works Section of the District Office and was advised that the site situation did not suggest relocation of the posting box as that might have implication to the structure of the nearby stall and the posting box itself. Meanwhile, we will continue to keep close watch on the condition of this box. (See attached file: SPB235(AfterPaint)1_27.11.12.jpg).
We are sorry that because no suitable contractor was found in the first tender exercise for preservation of the 9 vintage posting boxes, we have taken longer time in arranging the preservation work. The contract has finally been awarded in late December 2012 and the preservation work is planned to be carried out in the 1st quarter of 2013 if everything going smooth.
For the other posting boxes, we have in place a scheduled repainting plan. I understand that my colleague Candy will take follow-up action to see if priority should be given to those identified.
With warm regards,
Mary

31/12/2012 update

Letter to HK Post after 2012 Annual Checkup
Dear Ms Chung,
I hope this email finds you well. As you might already be aware my team has been conducting an annual checkup for all the vintage postboxes, and this has just been completed. We are very glad to note most boxes have been repainted and are in fairly good conditions. However, we also find the conditions of the following boxes wanting:
- No.252, GRV pillar box at Sok Kwu Wan, Lamma Island (http://hkpostbox.xanga.com/729429198/%E6%90%9C%E7%B4%A2%E9%9A%8A%E5%9B%9E%E5%A0%B1---%E9%83%B5%E7%AD%92256/): rusting (especially near the foot) and faded paint. We are indeed surprised that this box has apparently not been repainted or well maintained like the other two GRV pillar boxes Nos. 91 and 235. Given that this box is one of the oldest and on the list of the nine preserved boxes, we hope immediate attention would be accorded to it.
- Three GRV/GRVI wall boxes:
No.401, Ming Shun Tsuen / Tui Min Hoi, Sai Kung: rusting and peeled paint on the door. (http://hkpostbox.xanga.com/726271163/%E6%90%9C%E7%B4%A2%E9%9A%8A%E5%9B%9E%E5%A0%B1---%E9%83%B5%E7%AD%92401/)
No.227, School Road, Cheung Chau (GRVI): unevenly faded paint (indicative of a poor paint job or internal rusting?) and rusting near the door and on the door hinge.
No.110 - Chung Chi College / Tai Po Road, Bus Stop : faded and peeled paint.
As these boxes are also on the nine-box preservation list, we believe better attention is warranted. We indeed think the fine job done by your department on another GRV wall box No.55 at Cassia Road / Magnolia Road, Yau Yuet Tsuen sets a very good standard to follow (http://hkpostbox.xanga.com/725717919/%E6%90%9C%E7%B4%A2%E9%9A%8A%E5%9B%9E%E5%A0%B1---%E9%83%B5%E7%AD%9255/).
- No.370, ERII wall box at Tai Mong Tsai Bus Terminal, Sai Kung: rusting in the lower half of the box (http://hkpostbox.xanga.com/726268615/%E6%90%9C%E7%B4%A2%E9%9A%8A%E5%9B%9E%E5%A0%B1---%E9%83%B5%E7%AD%92370/). We notice that the condition of this box has already been vasttly improved since April 2011 and we appreciate the effort. However, the rusting seems to have recurred now. We therefore believe measures should be taken again to remove the existing rust and further anti-rusting treatment is due.
- We also wish to bring to your attention three relatively minor cases. No.90, Kwun Tong Road, Kai Tak Mansion: peeled paint and this seems to be the only ERII box that has not been repainted recently (http://hkpostbox.xanga.com/701388581/2562832034385382223822577---371093157090/). No.162, Fu On House,Tai Wo Hau Estate, Tai Wo Hau (http://hkpostbox.xanga.com/717768245/%E6%90%9C%E7%B4%A2%E9%9A%8A%E5%9B%9E%E5%A0%B1---%E9%83%B5%E7%AD%92162/) and No.96 at Castle Peak Road, Seaview Garden, Tsing Yung Street (http://hkpostbox.xanga.com/726235356/%E6%90%9C%E7%B4%A2%E9%9A%8A%E5%9B%9E%E5%A0%B1---%E9%83%B5%E7%AD%9296/): unauthorized bills posted on both of these two ERII boxes.
Also, per our earlier correspondence on the No.235 Lei Yue Mun GRV box, I still have not heard from your colleague Ms. Candy Fung about its latest condition; I hope attention has already been given to it.
Last but not the least, may I wish you a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year!
With best wishes,
Sin Wai Man

"Dear Mr. Sin,
Just back from leave and sorry for not replying your mail earlier. First of all we are thankful for the untiring efforts of your team in conducting checkup for our posting boxes. I have referred your observations and suggestions to my colleague Ms. Candy Fung who is in charge of posting boxes. She is looking into the matter and will revert to you as soon as possible.
Last but not least, thanks again for bringing the matter to our attention.

Letter to HK Post dated 6/11/2012 regarding the condition of this box:
"Dear Ms Chung,
I had an opportunity to visit postbox No.235 at Hoi Phong Road, Lei Yue Mun yesterday and found it to be in very poor condition again. You will notice from the attached photos (more could be viewed here:
https://picasaweb.google.com/101558989128314488492/No2355112012?authuser=0&feat=directlink) that the lower part of the box looked particularly worrying. I understand this is perhaps due to no fault of the Hong Kong Post but I think another round of maintenance in the near future would be helpful. Given the unfavourable location of this box that may cause it to be splashed with sea water from the nearby seafood stalls, I would suggest more frequent maintenance, say, in the form of a wash every month, is needed for this box. In the long run, I hope Hong Kong Post could relocate this box to a spot more conducive to its preservation.
P.S. Our search team is currently conducting an annual checkup on the old postboxes, we have so far visited some 20 boxes and found them all (except this Lei Yue Mun box) in fairly good conditions. Please allow me to convey our appreciation. Our checkup records could be found on our blog:
http://hkpostbox.xanga.com/)
With best wishes,
Sin Wai Man"

Correspondence with HK Post on the small defect
16/4/2012
Dear Ms Chung,
I thought I shared with you one observation of mine on the two KGV boxes when I paid them a visit today. I think the overall repainting was well done. However, minor paint peel-off is already noticeable on a different spot on each box (please see attached pictures). I do not want to sound nitpicky but given the paint job was newly finished, this perhaps reflects badly on the workmanship of the contractor engaged.
Best regards,
Sin Wai Man

Dear Mr. Sin,
Thanks very much for sharing with me your observation on the workmanship of
the two boxes. Surely we will follow up with the contractor on the defects.
Have a nice day!
