Below is their reply that I just received. Very responsive and forthcoming; much appreciated; hope the issue can be resolved soon.

    "Dear Mr. Sin,

Thank you for your mail dated 5 May infor
ming us of the irregularity observed on the newly painted historic posting boxes. We have also noted
this irregularity and the coating advisor of the contractor is investigating the root cause of the irregularity. Apart from posting box no. 91, 235 and 230, we also observed the same irregularity from the other three posting boxes no. 227, 256 and 401 that have recently undergone preservation work. There is no conclusive finding at the moment. The
contractor has been urged to find out the root cause of the irregularity and take remedial action as soon as possible.

Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. I will let you know when the investigation result is received.

    With best regards,
    Mary"

Our letter to the Post Office (5 May 2013)

    Dear Ms Chung,

My team has now visited another three of the nine historic postboxes that we understood to have undergone preservation work recently. Quite to our surprise, two categories of issues with the work are already noticeable. As attaching the photos may exceed the allowed capacity of this email, I have placed them on this online album for your reference: https://picasaweb.google.com/107939761065063166674/Postboxes91235239?authuser=0&feat=directlink

    1. Paint Peel-Off: On the KGV box No.91 in Kwun Tong we noticed at least three different spots of paint peel-off. We fear that some of these will create pockets of space that may collect water, which may eventually lead to rusting. On the oval-shaped box No. 239 in Central, we also found a minor paint peel-off.
    2. Dark Spots Underneath/Inside the Paint Coating: These are noticeable on the Lei Yue Mun KGV box No.235 and also No.91 in Kwun Tong.

Given the recency of the preservation work, we think these are unusual. It seems to us a new type of paint (which has a more glossy look) is now used and we suspect the paint peel-off and the dark spots may be related to this new paint and/or poor workmanship.

Given the importance of these heritage postboxes, we hope these issues will be looked into as soon as possible.

    Best regards,

    Sin Wai Man
